Dr. James Rusin, MD, MBA, Founder of Rusin Medical Devices

Dr. James Rusin, MD, MBA Why does anyone start a business? Why does anyone try to develop and patent a medical device? I do not know about anyone else, but I know how I happened to go about it.

I have been a practicing Family Physician with a full practice of mostly wonderful patients. But, I needed 'more' in terms of goals and challenges. I love to build things and ideas excite me. I have had previous ideas for medical devices, but I never took the time to develop them and sooner or later someone else would market a device that served the same purpose. I really wanted to follow up one of my ideas and see it grow. According to an old Chinese proverb, "Be careful what you wish for!"

In the fall of 1998, I was diagnosed with a form of multiple myeloma, a blood borne cancer that attacks bone. The first physicians I consulted gave me 3 to 6 months to live. (That is an incentive to do something, if there ever was one!) I found some physicians who were not as complacent about my demise and I underwent irradiation therapy. They told me the average survival time, after treatment of the cancer, was between 3 and 5 years. It has now been 4.5 years and I am doing well on medication. I am able to continue practicing medicine and developing medical devices.

The diagnosis of cancer had a very sobering effect on me. On a personal level, I had always believed that I was on this earth for a purpose. Yeah, I know, "Shouldn't being a doctor and helping people, having a wonderful wife and family, and having many friends be enough of a purpose?" But, I always thought there would be an even greater purpose.

An idea for a medical device kept rolling over in my head and would not go away. The idea had the potential to resolve a number of my personal issues.

  1. I have always wanted to follow one of my device ideas to conclusion. What better opportunity and how many more chances was I going to get?

  2. I really wanted to do something that had an impact. If our device could help save the lives of women with breast cancer, this could be the 'impact' I was looking for.

I shared my idea and reasoning with my wife, Mary. We decided to start a company that resulted in Rusin Medical Devices, LLC.

It quickly became obvious why we had not done this before. Starting our company and developing SafeTouch has been a slow and arduous task. Once the company was established, we concentrated on the device, which came to be known as SafeTouch. SafeTouch has had a life of its own with many apparent fatal obstacles, which were overcome and sometimes resulted in an even better product. There is no doubt in my mind this device was supposed to be developed by us for the benefit of all women who are discovered to have breast lumps.

Feel confident that while you use SafeTouch you are improving the communication of the
location of discovered breast lumps while bringing peace of mind to your patients.

Physicians ~ We would like to hear from you.
